Staying at Illawong is far removed from a stay in a motel room or even in a resort lodge. Occupants need to have some understanding of – and take responsibility for – the operation of Illawong’s systems: electrical (including back-up generator), gas, waste management, water systems, and the emergency shelter.
Experience has shown at Illawong and elsewhere that the absence of management systems (such as those in use at Illawong), and the absence of supervision by an experienced / trained person, can expose a building, such as Illawong Lodge, and its operational systems to potential damage through misuse or neglect.
It is an Illawong Ski Tourers policy that an Accredited Lodge Leader is present at all times when the Lodge is occupied for the protection of people, the building and the environment.
Lodge Accreditation involves undertaking training in the operation of the Illawong Lodge systems. By successfully completing lodge training you can become an ‘Accredited Lodge Operator’. All lodge users are encouraged to undertake accreditation training but only Illawong Members may actually be accredited as Accredited Lodge Leaders. Non-members are encouraged to participate in lodge accreditation training, however they are not eligible to become an Accredited Lodge Leader.
Lodge training is held during the Easter Work Party and takes about two hours. The training is hands-on and is undertaken in small groups due to the small spaces inside the lodge. Training places are therefore limited and priority is given to Illawong Members, then to lodge users who have previously stayed at Illawong and have some familiarity with the lodge systems. RSVP to book your Lodge Operator Accreditation Training.
